A man in New Zealand has been arrested after infecting his wife with HIV through pricking her skin with a needle whilst she slept.
It's though that the man, who is also HIV positive, infected his now-estranged wife because he wanted to continue having sex with her the Sunday Star Times reported.
Court documents show how the man pricked his 33-year-old wife's skin with a needle laced with is own infected blood on at least two occassions. The woman only became aware that something strange was happening after she discovered marks on her legs.
"In my sleep I felt a prick on my leg. I got up... and I flicked the blankets... I looked at my husband and he was wide awake."
The woman, who can not be named, later confronted her husband about the marks on her legs after discovering specks of blood on the bed sheets.
She told police that her husband had been behaving strangely for a number of weeks. Her suspicions were raised further after she inadvertently found her husband with a syringe full of blood which he refused to explain.
The woman told investigators that, although she had discovered her husband had HIV, she decided to stay with him and maintain the family for the sake of the children.
It wasn't until several months later after a routine medical check-up that the woman was declared HIV positive. Confused, the woman told her husband who confessed that he had infected her with the deadly virus.
Her husband claimed that he wanted to make her like him so that she would not leave him for another man.
After an official complaint, police arrested the man who faces up to fourteen years in prison. The defendent is due to be sentenced at Auckland's High Court.
