The United States has so far declined Russian requests for binding guarantees that no American or NATO missile defence installation on European soil will compromise Russia’s deterrence capability.
If the Americans continue to dig their heels on the issue and go it alone in developing missile defences in Europe, Russia will take appropriate diplomatic and military measures to counter the threat.
Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke about this in an interview for Reuters on Friday.
He said Russia remains open to dialogue with the US on missile defence and hopes the Americans will change their stance.
